What is WiFi 6 | How Fast it really is? | WiFi 6 - Explained Simply

Updated: Jul 24, 2020

5G may be is what everyone talking about but WiFi 6 is on the verge to blow your doors off. Yes, you guessed it right. WiFi is about to get much faster in terms of speeds in coming time as the demand for faster and more capable internet is constantly increasing overtime.

Back then WiFi was not called by series number but with a much techie 802.11 number code given by IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

And as updates came each one was given a letter tagged on the end of the code like b, a, g, n, ac.

To make it easier for consumers and for the sake of naming, the next WiFi standard i.e 802.11.ax will be referred to as WiFi 6. And the previous standards are renamed as this -

WiFi 1: 802.11b

WiFi 2: 802.11a

WiFi 3: 802.11g

WiFi 4: 802.11n

WiFi 5: 802.11ac

WiFi 6: 802.11ax

So, WiFi 6 in the next-generation standard of the existing WiFi 5 which will be significantly much faster and will be capable of doing more stuff.

Benefits of WiFi 6 :

Speed & Capacity - It will be able to handle more capacity, so more devices will be able to connect to your WiFi router with very fewer issues and faster speed.

Better Performance - Wi-Fi 6 is designed to handle more crowded areas. So, places like airports, hotels or small stadiums often have issues like slow internet speed. Well, WiFi 6 is gonna help fix those issues.

Less battery consumption - WiFi 6 has Target Wake Time in it which communicates with the device and knows its wake and sleep time which reduces battery usage of that device.

WiFi 6 is not going to change the band so you will still have the 2.4GHz and 5 GHz band. And it will be about 40% faster than WiFi 5. So, it should be able to handle speed up to 9.6 Gb/s which is 3 times more than WiFi 5.

The Devices which will support WiFi 6 will have WiFi 6 certification mark on it like below.

As we move more into doing online video streaming and if a lot of that streaming is in 4k high-resolution streams and a lot more people will be playing games online. So WiFi-6 is best suited to handle those kinds of scenarios and its impact will be huge in this digital generation.
